Introduction to graphic tablets

Learn what types of tablets exist and which one you should start with.
Krita tutorial series (FREE): http://gdquest.com/game-art-quest/volume-1/krita-tutorial-for-game-artists/
----
Which tablet should you buy to get started with digital art? The answer: a flat one, on your desktop. These are way cheaper than display tablets, and you can find a secondhand device at a very low price. They take a little time getting used to, but graphic tablets are necessary if you want to paint digitally. They allow you to draw with much more precision than the mouse, and they track the pressure you apply on the stylus to achieve a variety of painting effects.

Picasa - a free program to organize your reference images

Overview of Picasa, Google’s program to manage your pictures
This video is part of the Krita tutorial series (FREE): http://gdquest.com/game-art-quest/volume-1/krita-tutorial-for-game-artists/
----
Any professional artist needs a solid library of reference pictures to work with. Picasa is a good tool to manage them. It is a free photo management program for Windows and Mac that was developed by Google. Although it is not in development anymore, at the time I am making this video, it is my favorite free application to manage pictures on Windows. There are currently no satisfying open source alternatives I know of.
Picasa allows you to add metadata to your pictures, to search through your library, and to organize them effortlessly. It is a great companion for any digital artist, and one I recommend that you check out if you want to follow my Krita training.

Working with the selection tools in Krita

Learn how selections work in this Krita tutorial.
Krita tutorial series (FREE): http://gdquest.com/game-art-quest/volume-1/krita-tutorial-for-game-artists/
----
Selections, as the name suggests, restrict your drawing operations to a certain area on the canvas. They bound your brush strokes, your filters or the transforms you may apply on your layers.
Krita offers most of the basic selection tools you’d expect in a digital painting application: you can make contiguous selections (the tool is also called magic wand in other programs), you can select by color, or draw an outline to select everything inside of it.
In this tutorial, I’ll tell you how selections work. You might not know it, but a selection is just a black-and-white image, just like your layer masks and color channels. Knowing that will allow us to manipulate our selections with blending modes just like we do with our layers.
We will then take a look at the most important selection tools in Krita.

Krita layers tutorial: introduction to the layers docker

Learn how to manage your layers in Krita in this intro tutorial.
Find the exercise sheet on the Krita tutorial page (FREE): http://gdquest.com/game-art-quest/volume-1/krita-tutorial-for-game-artists/
----
This tutorial focuses on the basics of layer management in Krita 2.9. A future video will cover all of the changes brought by the 3.0 version.
Layers are hard to get into if you’re not used to digital image retouching. Yet, they allow you to achieve a great deal of time saving operations. They allow you to change the way parts of your image blend together. In Krita, you can apply filters and nondestructive effects to specific layers.
Layers also allow you to rearrange your images’ composition at any time! You can keep your characters separate from your background, and work on them without messing up your painting. There is even a parameter to prevent you from painting outside of existing pixels on a layer.
If layer management is hard to get into, you should really take the time to learn it. Mastering layers will save you a lot of time as you learn new features in Krita.

Krita's pop up palette and color picker

Krita 3 tips: learn the pop-up palette
Krita tutorial series (FREE): http://gdquest.com/game-art-quest/volume-1/krita-tutorial-for-game-artists/
----
The pop-up palette is like your traditional artist's palette. It allows you to pick colors, to quickly switch between your favorite brush presets, and it displays a history of your last used colors. It is a great time-saver.

Then, if you want to get more precise with color picking, Krita features a dedicated panel called the advanced color selector. It can be resized and customized to your liking. We' re taking a look at it in this video.

Krita's Fill tool: fill outlines and selections

Let us see how we can fill a selection or our strokes in Krita.
Krita tutorial series (FREE): http://gdquest.com/game-art-quest/volume-1/krita-tutorial-for-game-artists/
----
In the previous videos, we have seen how to pick colors, how to make selections, and how to paint with the freehand brush tool. In this tutorial, I want to show you how to use the fill tool to fill strokes cleanly. Will also see how to fill selections using a few simple shortcuts like shift backspace, which fills the selection with our foreground color.
As far as the fill tool is concerned, Krita offers 2 different behaviors: on one end, it can work the same way as in Photoshop. This is the fast mode, which you toggle on or off by clicking the corresponding checkbox in the tool options docker. In fast mode, your fill will be aliased, but the tool will work very fast. Use this option when you want to do pixel art, concept art or quick sketches.
Then, there is Krita’s regular fill mode. This one offers a few extra options to feather and to expand the flood fill area. That way, you can get a very clean result when you color an illustration.
