Computer Science for Everyone - 11 - Binary, bits, and bytes

"Computer Science for Everyone" is an online course that covers all of the most important concepts in computer science, from hardware, to algorithms, to programming and data structures.

In this video we look at binary numbers, bits, and bytes. A binary number is just a representation of a number but using only two digits: 0 and 1. A bit is the smallest division of data in a computer, and a byte is 8 bits. Keep watching to learn more!

Computer Science for Everyone - 12 - What is ASCII?05m

Computer Science for Everyone - 12 - What is ASCII?

"Computer Science for Everyone" is an online course that covers all of the most important concepts in computer science, from hardware, to algorithms, to programming and data structures.

In this video we look at how we can encode letters and symbols as binary numbers in the computer. This is extremely useful, or else we would not be able to use any letter when using a computer! In this video we explain how this is done with the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). This method is a bit obsolete now, but the same principles apply with other methods that are now more common.

Computer Science for Everyone - 17 - Comments, Statements, and Methods in Java05m

Computer Science for Everyone - 17 - Comments, Statements, and Methods in Java

"Computer Science for Everyone" is an online course that covers all of the most important concepts in computer science, from hardware, to algorithms, to programming and data structures.

In this video we look at what comments, statements, and methods are, not in only in Java but in any programming language.
Comments are sections of code that don't run, and are used by the programmer to write explanations or "comments".
Statements are lines of code that execute single instructions.
Methods are names for groups of these statements, so that you can execute a bunch of statements together with a single "method call", which is a way of saying that you can just write the method name, and this executes all the statements that are enclosed within it.
